Maths week Scotland

With the recovery curriculum focusing so heavily on Numeracy, the SSA wanted to help with fun and go-to resources for Maths Week, held in September. During the pandemic, it made sense to take Maths outside, providing extra space for social distancing and supporting physical and for the mental health and wellbeing benefits from being outdoors.

Working with Maths Week Scotland, we sent out maths kits to Highland schools. These had 17 different numeracy, problem-solving and data-handling games which teachers could do outdoors.

Make a Bolt for it’ encouraged children to gather data about their stride and height, using stopwatches to test their pace. There was also a ‘Maths Trail’ and ‘Scavenger Hunt’ as well as ideas for reinventing traditional games such as hopscotch and ladders to help with numeracy.

With guidance set by the Scottish Government for schools to maximise the use of outdoor spaces, the activities allowed maths to be taken to the playground while making it fun and active and at the same time, boosting numeracy and improving wellbeing.

93% said their pupils enjoyed taking part, 91% said pupils had learnt something new about maths.

There was great feedback from teachers on the kits, with the experience described as fun, relevant, engaging, accessible, active and challenging.

Specifically the packs supported: increasing awareness of the role of maths in work and everyday life;  being able to share maths with parents and the wider community; and developing pupil skills in maths and associated areas such as teamwork and leadership.
